Introduction
Based on the explanation provided in ISO/IEC 24765:2009, the SEBoK defines maintenance as the process of modifying a system or component after delivery to correct faults, improve performance or other attributes, or adapt to a changed environment. (2009)
Process Approaches
There are several possible approaches for providing maintenance for a system.
- Identify and assign organizational responsibility for support. The roles and responsibilities of the developer, customer, and end user need to be defined for the support of the system throughout its lifecycle. Explicitly identifying organizational responsibility for support (Level 1 maintenance) and for enhancements (Level 2 maintenance) ensures that relevant stakeholders are involved early in the SE processes.
- Document criteria for maintenance actions versus major enhancements. Criteria for determining whether changes involve simple maintenance actions versus major capability enhancements during the support phase should be defined. Criteria should include the magnitude and complexity of the envisioned change, risk, and cost considerations.
- Evaluate the readiness of support personnel to assume support responsibility for the system. Evaluation of personnel readiness may include completion of required training or demonstration of capability to operate or support the system.
